Analyzing Statements of Cash Flows II

3 mục · khoảng 32 phút đọc

ĐÁNH GIÁ CASH FLOW SOURCES AND USES

Phân tích và diễn giải Free Cash Flow to Firm (FCFF) và Free Cash Flow to Equity (FCFE)

  • Cash flow statement hữu ích trong việc tính free cash flow to the firm (FCFF) và free cash flow to equity (FCFE).

Đánh giá các sources and uses of cash flow chính

  • Các sources and uses of cash flow chính là gì?

Phần này sẽ giúp hiểu lượng cash được chi cho investments in property, plant, and equipment; acquisitions of companies; và investments in stocks and bonds.

Footnote 2 to the financial statements:

20162017
Cash flows provided by operating activities2,6522,958
Cash flows provided by (used in) investing activities(848)(11,437)
Cash flows provided by (used in) financing activities(1,616)8,289
Exchange rate effects on cash(151)272
Increase in cash3881

Solution:

  1. How does net income compare with cash flow from operating activities?
Solution:

  1. What types of financing cash flows does Groupe Danone have?

    • Solution:

3 RATIOS AND COMMON-SIZE ANALYSIS

tính toán và đánh giá free cash flows to the firm và to equity, đồng thời phân tích cash flow ratios phục vụ đánh giá performance và coverage

Figure 5 shows the second way of common-sizing the statement of cash flows and that is the Net Revenue Method. In the net revenue method, all entries in the statement of cash flows are represented as a percentage of net revenue. Common-sizing

The statement in Exhibit 5 has been constructed using the cash flow statement of Acme based on the indirect approach to operating activities and net revenue (revenue from customers) of USD23,543 for the year 2018 in Exhibit 3.

Another benefit that the approach offers to the analyst with regard to forecasting cash flows in the future is the fact that the various elements in the common-size approach (such as depreciation, fixed capital investments, borrowings and repayments) are expressed as percentages of net income. In this case, once the analyst forecasts net income, he/she can use the common-size approach to forecast cash flows.

  1. Given the information in the Exhibit 6 below, analyze the trend of Apple:

    • A. depreciation and amortization expense.

    • B. capital expenditures.

    • Solution:

  • A. Apple’s depreciation and amortization expense consistently amounted to just less than 5% of total net revenue in the years 2015 and 2016, while it dropped to 4.4% in 2017.

  • B. Apple has higher capital expenditures than depreciation and amortization in the years 2016 and 2017, while the capital expenditures were equivalent to depreciation and amortization in the year 2015. Capital

expenditures approached 6 percent. This demonstrates that Apple is not only spending money on replacing property, plant, and equipment but increasing such expenses. However, Apple is able to generate more than sufficient operating cash flows since cash flows from operations exceeded 27 percent of sales in each year.

  1. Compare the company's operating cash flow as a percentage of revenue with Apple's net profit margin.
Solution:

The company's operating cash flow as a percentage of sales is much higher than net profit margin in each year; however, the gap between the two is gradually decreasing. For example, net profit margin in 2015 was 22.8 percent while operating cash flow as a percentage of sales was 34.8 percent. In 2017, net profit margin was 21.1 percent while operating cash flow as a percentage of sales was 27.7 percent. The reason for the decrease seems to be an increase in accounts receivable and inventory purchases, partially offset by accounts payable increases.

  1. Discuss Apple’s use of its positive operating cash flow.
Solution:

Apple is generating large amounts of operating cash flows, which exceed net income. Such cash flow is used for the relatively modest purchases of property, plant, and equipment, as well as substantial purchases of marketable securities, payments of dividends and repurchase of shares of the company.

FREE CASH FLOW MEASURES

tính toán và diễn giải free cash flow to the firm, free cash flow to equity, và performance và coverage cash flow ratios

FCFF = NI + NCC + Interest (1 – Tax rate) – FCInv – WCInv

trong đó:

NI = Net income,

Where NCC = non-cash charges (depreciation and amortization),

Int = Interest expense,

FCInv = capital expenditures (fixed capital), and

WCInv = Working capital investments.

FCFF = CFO + Int(1-Tax rate) – FCInv

Whereas CFO is cash flow from operating activities in terms of US GAAP or cash flow from operations in terms of IFRS where the interest paid by the firm is included in the operating activities. However, if the interest paid is included in financing activities, then there will be no need to add back Int(1-Tax rate). In case of IFRS, when interest and dividends received have been included in investing activities, these should be added back to CFO in order to calculate FCFF. Further, in case dividends paid are deducted in the operating section of financial statements, they should be added back in calculating FCFF.

Exhibit 7: FCFF for Acme Corporation

{USD258 [1 – 0.34]a}170
Less: Net investments in fixed capital (USD1,300(538)
– USD762)
FCFFUSD2,238

a Income tax rate of 0.34 = (Tax expense ÷ Pretax income) = (1,139÷1,139 ÷ 3,349).

FCFE = CFO – FCInv + Net Borrowings.

FCFE = CFO – FCInv - Net Debt Repayment.

Trừ: Net investments in fixed capital (USD1,300(538)
– USD762)

Phân tích Statements of Cash Flows II

EN: 1. B is correct. One appropriate technique for preparing a common-size statement of cash flows is to express each line item in the statement of cash flows as a percent of net revenues. Another alternative approach for preparing the statement of cash flows is to express each cash inflow as a percent of total cash inflows and each cash outflow as a percent of total cash outflows.

LỜI GIẢI

EN: 2. B is correct. Free cash flow to the firm may be determined as follows: Operating cash flow + After-tax interest expense – Capital expenditures.

EN: 3. C is correct. An overall review of the principal sources and applications of cash should be made first when analyzing the statement of cash flows.

  1. B là đáp án đúng. Free cash flow to the firm có thể được xác định như sau: Operating cash flow + After-tax interest expense – Capital expenditures.

EN: 4. (A) is the right answer. This is interest coverage ratio and it measures the ability of the business to cover interest expense. This ratio uses cash flows data, however there is another version of interest coverage ratio that uses EBITDA based on income statement as numerator.

  1. C là đáp án đúng. Khi phân tích statement of cash flows, trước tiên cần thực hiện đánh giá tổng thể các nguồn và mục đích sử dụng cash chủ yếu.

  2. (A) là đáp án đúng.
